Some strange cases came to light in the Panchayat elections. 79.20 percent voting took place in Pathankot district. There was a tie in the village Badh Sudhal which comes under the Kandi area Dharkalan block. The votes received by candidates Asha Devi and Meena Devi were equal during the counting. After this, a toss was conducted to declare one of the two candidates as the winner. Meena Devi won the toss and she was declared the Sarpanch of the village.

Retired officer of Punjab Education Board, Superintendent Baljinder Singh had gone to visit Gurudwaras in Pakistan. He won the Sarpanch election in village Khanpur of District Fatehgarh Sahib, Punjab. He had set out on a tour of Gurudwaras in Pakistan with his family from October 4.

He won the election for the post of Sarpanch of village Khanpur, District Fatehgarh Sahib by defeating his rival candidate Satnam Singh by a margin of 139 votes. The villagers requested him to cancel his programme and contest the village sarpanch election, but Baljinder Singh refused. The villagers decided that Baljinder Singh should file nomination for the sarpanch election and go to Pakistan as per his regular programme. His election campaign will be taken care of by the youth and elders of the village. Baljinder Singh stayed away from campaigning throughout the election campaign. Sarpanch Baljinder Singh has assured the villagers that he will work for the welfare and development of the village without any bias or party affiliation.

In village Tolawal, located just 3 km from Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s native village Satauj in Sunam, after seeing defeat by one vote, the polling agent of the candidate chewed and swallowed 3 votes (ballot papers) of the winning candidate. Seeing his act, the ground slipped from under the feet of the presiding officer and other staff. Immediately a complaint was made to the police and a case was registered and the election result was declared in favour of the winning candidate.

In village Malla of Jagraon, the losing candidate clashed with the presiding officer present at the booth. She demanded that she be told who all had voted for the winning candidate. She started arguing with the officials over this and disrupted their work. Not only this, the angry woman candidate along with her companions attacked the officials, due to which a policeman also got injured due to being pushed.
