Punjab’s higher education system has achieved significant success in the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) conducted by the Ministry of Education. According to the survey, Punjab’s student-teacher ratio in all regular higher education institutions is 16, compared to the national average of 22. This means that the state has an average of 16 students per teacher. This ratio not only surpasses the national average but also demonstrates a strong position compared to neighboring states.
Student-Teacher Ratio in Haryana: 22
According to the report, the student-teacher ratio in Haryana is 22, in Himachal Pradesh 23, in Chandigarh 21, in Delhi and Jammu and Kashmir 20-21. In Uttar Pradesh, this ratio is 33, in Rajasthan 25, and in Uttarakhand 22. Consequently, the lower number of students per teacher in Punjab allows students to receive relatively more academic guidance.
Even with both regular and distance education combined, Punjab’s student-teacher ratio is 18.
The report states that the student-teacher ratio is an important measure of education quality. A better ratio increases teacher focus, helping to address weaknesses and enhance learning. Punjab also excels in admissions to strong higher education institutions.
Across both government and private institutions, 531,335 students enrolled in the state. Haryana saw 691,081 students, while Himachal Pradesh saw 192,022 students, and Jammu and Kashmir saw 182,278 students. Rajasthan saw 1,865,750 students, Uttarakhand 240,685 students, and Uttar Pradesh 6,016,884 students enrolled in higher education. Uttar Pradesh led the way in terms of overall numbers.
Girls ahead in higher education.
According to the survey, girls are ahead of boys in enrolling in higher education. 65,812 girls enrolled in postgraduate courses, compared to 56,609 boys. 7,246 girls and 5,444 boys enrolled in PhD programs. 18 girls enrolled in MPhil programs, while no boys enrolled. 56,113 girls and 42,865 boys enrolled in diploma programs. 3,024 girls and 2,717 boys enrolled in PG diploma programs.
