Around 202 farmers were released from Patiala Central Jail and Nabha New District Jail late on Monday night. About 70 farmers have been released from Patiala Jail and 132 farmers from Nabha Jail. Earlier in the day, IGP (Headquarters) Sukhchain Singh Gill had given a statement that the detained farmers will be released soon.
After the police action on Shambhu and Khanauri borders on March 19, about 150 farmers were lodged in Nabha New District Jail. All these farmers were detained by the police from Khanauri border. The 132 released farmers belong to different districts. Farmer leaders have expressed satisfaction over the release of their colleagues and demanded that the rest of the farmers should also be released soon.
In fact, on March 19, while returning after meeting with the Center, many big farmer leaders including farmer leaders Sarwan Singh Pandher, Jagjit Singh Dallewal were detained by the police on the way. After this, the police turned to the borders, where the police took strong action and arrested hundreds of farmers and demolished the constructions made by them on the borders. Since then, the Punjab government and the police administration were constantly on the target of the opposition. The opposition was constantly demanding the release of the farmers.
The police detained four farmer leaders who had gone to meet farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who was kept in a private hospital in Patiala. The police released these farmer leaders after keeping them in the Urban Estate police station for about four hours. These include Man Singh Rajpura, Ujagar Singh Dhamoli, Gurdev Singh Jandali and Jawahar Lal Gajjukheda of BKU Sidhupur. According to these farmer leaders, Dallewal has sent a letter, in which he has said that the Punjab government is lying that he is getting treatment in Patiala hospital on his own will. Dallewal has stopped taking medical facilities since March 19, he is not even taking water.
