Hearing a petition challenging the mandatory 20 percent stubble-based fuel for brick kilns in Punjab, the Punjab-Haryana High Court has made Central Pollution Control Board a party in this case.

The association told the High Court that they are using coal in the kilns as per the instructions of the Central Government. Meanwhile, the Punjab government issued a notification making 20 percent stubble-based fuel mandatory for brick kilns. It was told in the petition that this will have a bad effect on the members of the association. Straw-based fuel is five times more expensive than coal and it is available only seasonally. In such a situation, this order of the Punjab government should be canceled and the petitioners should be given relief.
