After the massacre of tourists in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, India has given a befitting reply to Pakistan by stopping the Indus Water Treaty of 1960. North India will directly benefit from the complete cancellation of Indus Water Treaty.
North India will get a new lease of life
Especially, with the end of this treaty, Punjab will get 10 thousand cusecs of additional water through Ravi. This can prove to be a new lease of life for North India, especially when states like Punjab are facing groundwater crisis. Former Punjab IAS officer Kahan Singh Pannu said that the issue of excess water going to Pakistan has been raised since the time of India-Pakistan partition. There was talk of taking out a big canal from the Chenab river flowing in Jammu and Kashmir and giving its water to Punjab.
The then Chief Engineer of the Canal Department of Punjab had prepared the detailed project report of this scheme in 1955, which made way for Punjab to get 10 thousand cusecs of water, but due to the Indus Water Treaty signed between former Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru and former President of Pakistan Ayub Khan on 19 September 1960 in Karachi, this project remained in limbo. Former IAS and known as an expert on water disputes, Kahan Singh Pannu said that the cancellation of this agreement will directly benefit Punjab.
Punjab, Haryana and Delhi can get additional water
Water dispute has been going on between Punjab and Haryana since 1966. Then under the Punjab Reorganization Act, the erstwhile Punjab was divided into Punjab and Haryana. There was a need to share the river water between the two states.
There was a proposal to build a 214 km long waterway under the Sutlej Yamuna Link Canal Project regarding water sharing between Punjab and Haryana. Under this, Sutlej from Punjab was to be connected to Yamuna river from Haryana. In such a situation, the Indus Water Treaty can not only solve the water shortage in Punjab but also the problem in Haryana and Delhi. With the cancellation of Indus Water Treaty, the drought in Rajasthan will also be reduced.
A second link of Ravi-Beas was to be built for Punjab-Haryana water dispute
A second link of Ravi-Beas was to be built to end the water dispute between Punjab and Haryana. In such a situation, if the Indus Water Treaty is cancelled, then with the construction of this second link, both the states can get additional water. With the construction of this second link, the water which was going to Pakistan till now, will be able to be used by the states of North India.
