Panchayat elections will be held in Punjab in September next month. During the hearing on the petition filed for the demand to direct the conduct of elections, the Advocate General of Punjab has assured the High Court that the elections will be conducted by September. Based on this information given by the government, the High Court disposed of the petition. In another case, on the demand for conducting elections of municipal corporations and councils, the Punjab government has sought time to file a reply.

While filing the petition, Rulda Singh had told the High Court that last year the Punjab government had issued a notification and fixed the Panchayat elections in December 2023. Despite the notification, elections have not been conducted. Not conducting elections is a violation of Article 243 of the Constitution. The matter had reached the High Court and then later the government decided to reinstate the Panchayats.

The petitioner said that now a lot of time has passed, despite this the elections are not being conducted, due to which development work has stopped. The argument of not taking the risk of holding panchayat elections is understandable as the Lok Sabha elections are due by May, but it is still not right not to hold elections now. The Advocate General appeared on behalf of the Punjab government in the High Court and assured that the elections will be held by September. On this information, the High Court disposed of the petition.
