Jewellery worth Rs. 3 lakhs and the victim’s hand were cut with a chisel…… Family members are dissatisfied with the police functioning.
Senior journalist, Amritsar.
A couple was robbed outside the Police Commissioner’s residence on the intervening night of 30 May. In that case, the victim’s family on their own caught the culprit and handed them over to the police. On Friday, senior police officers at Majitha Road police station, patting their backs for their bravery, claimed to have arrested the culprits within a few hours of the incident. The family seems completely dissatisfied with the police’s functioning and is demanding from the police administration that the precious jewellery looted from them should be recovered and handed over to them soon. For now, the police have only recovered a toy pistol, the chisel used in the crime, and an Activa. The arrested criminals were identified as Sunny and Joshi Singh, residents of Patti in district Tarn Taran. Sources revealed that on the day of the incident, they had reached Amritsar to participate in a rally of a parliamentary candidate. On the statement of Sonia Vohra, wife of seriously injured Pankaj Vohra, a case was registered under various sections in Majitha Road police station.
Questions being raised on police functioning:
This incident has raised many questions on police functioning. The first question is that the incident took place outside the police commissioner’s residence. The police, which is deployed for security 24 hours a day, turned a blind eye during the incident. Moreover, when the victim’s family raised strong objections against those employees, they started saying that the incident did not take place here, but took place at a distance of 500 meters at Fores Chowk. After repeated pleadings by the victim woman, the police employees accepted their mistake and said that according to the law, they cannot leave their place at the time of any incident.
This was the whole case.
Pankaj Vohra and his wife Sonia Vohra were returning home on an Activa after attending a function in Putlighar. Right outside the Police Commissioner’s residence on Mall Road, another Activa rider who was following them hit them and knocked them down. When the robbers attacked his wife with a chisel, the husband put his hand forward. His hand was cut off immediately. After that, the wife folded her hands and told the robbers to take whatever they want but please spare my husband’s life. They fled after snatching jewellery worth about 3 lakhs and cash worth thousands. The victim’s family members gathered.
… This is how the alleged criminals were caught.
After the incident, the victim’s family members started looking for the alleged criminals. Later, the same criminals were making someone else their victim of robbery. When they shouted, those people gathered. Everyone caught the said robbers red-handed. Immediately handed them over to the police. The police recovered a toy pistol, chisel and Activa from their possession.
Jewellery and cash not recovered till now
After arresting the alleged criminals, the police is patting its bravery, but, the police has not been able to recover the jewellery and cash earned by the victim’s family. On top of that, the hospital is spending a lot of money on the surgery of the victim. It has been learned that the victim’s family is financially weak. They are pleading for help to recover their jewellery and cash from the alleged criminals. On the other hand, the victim’s family said that the police are asking for 2 days’ time citing the elections and are giving assurance that soon the money and jewellery will be recovered and handed over to the family.
The victim’s family is very close to the former councillor and former deputy chief minister
It is being said that the victim’s family is very close to former Congress councillor Kulbhushan Duggal and former deputy chief minister Om Prakash Soni. Regarding this matter, senior Congress leader Duggal raised questions on the current government and police functioning and said that the condition of Punjab was very bad during this government. It has become difficult for people to go out at night. The police does its work only at the behest of the government. Now they don’t care about the general public. If the victim’s family doesn’t get justice soon, they won’t back down from protesting.
