The Punjab government has come into action mode regarding drug trade from jails. Nine jail officials have been arrested. Not only jail officials and prisoners, a doctor is also involved in the drug trade, who has been arrested. The Punjab government has given this information during the hearing on a petition pending in the High Court. Taking the Punjab government’s reply on record, the High Court has now ordered to file a status report by July 25.
The matter of drug trade from Ferozepur jail came to the notice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. When the data was scrutinized, it was found that about 43000 phone calls were made from the jail. The High Court reprimanded the Punjab government in this matter and said that this is not possible without the connivance of the officials.
The High Court had found that in all the cases of mobile phone calls that had come to light so far, no action had been taken against any police officer. The High Court had then reprimanded the Punjab government and said that it seems that proper investigation of this case is not possible without involving the CBI. Then the Punjab government had requested the High Court not to give the investigation to the CBI and said that a better investigation will be done in this case and the report will be submitted.
Now while submitting the report in the High Court in this case, the Punjab government said that apart from the prisoners and the jail staff, the involvement of a doctor has also been found in this case. The doctor has been arrested. He is accused of helping in the drug business with mobile phones. Taking the affidavit of the Punjab government on record, the High Court has ordered to file a status report in this case by July 25.
