A tragic accident took place on Friday near Kiratpur Sahib on the border of Punjab and Himachal Pradesh. An SUV 500 and a Swift Dzire car collided head-on on the Chandigarh-Manali National Highway in the religious town of Kiratpur Sahib at around 6:30 am. The collision was so severe that both the vehicles were shattered. The taxi driver and a woman Deepika Sharma died in this horrific road accident. Four people including a small child travelling in the Swift Dzire (taxi) were injured.
The deceased taxi driver has been identified as Yuvraj Rana (30), a resident of Hamirpur, who was going to Chandigarh with passengers from Himachal. The injured include Ana Bharti, Reena Devi, a small child and another person. The SUV driver fled from the spot leaving the vehicle with his companions.
People present at the spot said that a young woman and two young men were travelling in the SUV with Delhi number, who were probably drunk. The SUV driver was driving in the wrong direction. The SUV collided head-on with a Swift Dzire coming from Himachal Pradesh. The people in the Dzire got stuck inside. The injured were pulled out with great difficulty by the people present on the spot. The surprising thing is that for an hour after the accident, neither the ambulance came nor the vehicles passing through the highway helped the injured. The injured kept screaming on the road for treatment.
According to the police, Ana Bharti, daughter of Prakash Chand, who was taking coaching in Chandigarh, had hired a taxi driver to drop her. On the way, Deepika Sharma, her small child, Reena Devi and another person were also sitting in the taxi as passengers. Ana Bharti and Reena Devi have been referred from Sri Anandpur Sahib. The woman Deepika Sharma, age 32, has died.
