Barring two Lok Sabha seats, there have been no surprising results in Punjab. People have kept their faith in the Congress by giving it seven seats. The party had won eight seats last time. On the other hand, the BJP, which is facing opposition from farmers, has not been able to show any wonders here. It has not won a single seat, whereas in 2019 the party had won two seats.
The Aam Aadmi Party has improved its seat count from one to three as compared to 2019, but it could not perform like the 2022 assembly elections. Only Punjab minister Meet Hayer has managed to win from CM Mann’s stronghold Sangrur, while the remaining four ministers have faced defeat. AAP has lost ten seats. At the same time, the SAD has lost one of its strongholds, Ferozepur, while the party has managed to save the Bathinda seat. The SAD has had to be content with only one seat.
In a surprising decision, Waris Punjab De chief Amritpal Singh from Khadoor Sahib and Sarabjit Singh Khalsa from Faridkot have won. Amritpal is lodged in Dibrugarh jail in the NSA case. Sarabjit Singh is the son of former PM Indira Gandhi’s assassin Beant Singh.
BJP’s account not opened
BJP, which contested alone by leaving the alliance, could not even open its account. The Modi factor did not work here. Modi held rallies on four seats here, but he could not win even one. The farmers’ movement was also a big reason for BJP’s defeat.
Akali Dal lost its stronghold
Congress broke into Ferozepur, which was the stronghold of SAD for 27 years, and toppled the government. Sukhbir Badal was elected MP from here in 2019. This time Nardev Singh Bobby Mann had to face defeat from here. However, it was a matter of relief for SAD that Harsimrat reached Parliament by winning from Bathinda for the fourth time.
People rejected the turncoats
Former CM Captain Amarinder Singh’s wife Preneet Kaur from Patiala, Ravneet Bittu from Ludhiana and Sushil Rinku from Jalandhar had to bear the brunt of defection. He was completely rejected by the public.
