The Labour Party has got a historic majority in the general elections in Britain. Punjabis living there also have an important contribution in the victory of the Labour Party. Jalandhar-based Tanmanjit Singh Dhesi has again become an MP. Apart from Tanmanjit, Jas Athwal, Preet Gill, Gurinder Joshan, Kirith, Jeevan Sandhar, Satvir Kaur, Varinder Jas, Seema Malhotra, Harpreet Uppal have won the election.

Tanmanjit Singh Dhesi, who became Europe’s youngest Sikh mayor in the city of Gravesham, England, has also become the first Sikh MP of the British Parliament.

Tanmanjit Singh Dhesi, who has achieved the distinction of becoming the first turbaned Sikh MP in the UK, has a command over many languages. Tanmanjit, who is fondly called Channi at home and Tan in Slough, says that he will work for the development of his constituency and will hold the heads of people of Indian origin high with pride. Tanmanjit is a resident of village Raipur Farala. His father Jaspal Singh Dhesi went to UK in 1977 and there not only established his business but also became the head of the Gurudwara of Gravesham.

Tanmanjit Singh Dhesi was born in UK. His father sent Tanmanjit to Punjab for studies so that he could gain complete knowledge of Punjabi language, Punjabi literature and culture. Tanmanjit started studying by staying with his uncle Paramjit Singh Raipur. First he was admitted to Shivalik Public School Mohali and then to Dashmesh Academy Anandpur Sahib. When terrorism was at its peak in Punjab, Paramjit Singh took Tanmanjit to UK. Tanmanjit went back to UK but his ties with Punjab did not break. After doing PhD from University of London, Cambridge University, Tanmanjeet moved forward in business and meanwhile he got inclined towards the Labor Party. He became the youngest mayor of Gravesham.

UK’s first female Sikh MP Preet Gill wins

Preet Kaur Gill, who became the first female Sikh MP of the UK, has won the general election. Labour Party candidate Preet Kaur Gill has won from Birmingham Edgbaston seat. Gill got 16,599 votes on the safe Labour seat and won with 44.3 percent votes. Conservative candidate Ashveer Sangha stood second with 8,231 votes. Gill became the first Sikh woman MP of Britain in 2017. Preet Kaur Gill also hails from Jalandhar. Satvir Kaur becomes MP from Southampton Test

At the same time, Labour Party member Satvir Kaur won the Southampton Test constituency. She secured her seat with a margin of 15,945 votes. Kaur’s success in Southampton Test comes after the tenure of Alan Whitehead, a veteran Labour MP who represented the constituency for a long time. Whitehead had decided to step down, clearing the way for a new representative.
