A petition has been filed in the Punjab Haryana High Court demanding separate toilets and lockups for transgenders in police stations and jails in Punjab. A notice was also sent to the Punjab government regarding this. In response to which the Punjab Police says that there is no separate provision for transgenders.

Actually, a petition was filed in the High Court by lawyer Sunpreet Singh. In which Sunpreet had said that transgenders are identified as the third gender. In view of the apex court’s decision in the NALSA vs Union of India case, separate cells, wards, barracks and toilets should be built inside the jails to protect transgenders from any kind of mental or physical harassment. Separate lockups should also be built in each police station.

The case was heard by Chief Justice Sheel Nagu and Justice Anil Khetrapal. The next date after the hearing has been set for September 27.
