The Punjab-Haryana High Court has given a big blow to the Punjab government and has quashed the state government’s order to change the criteria for admission to MBBS and BDS courses under the NRI quota. Due to this, now relatives will not get the benefit of NRI quota.

The High Court said in its order that the expansion of the definition of NRI through the corrigendum of August 20 is unfair. The purpose of the NRI quota was to benefit genuine NRIs and their children, so that they can get access to educational opportunities in India. By broadening the definition and including distant relatives like uncles, aunts, grandparents and cousins, the basic purpose of the quota has been weakened. Due to this expansion, misuse of the quota is possible. Due to this expansion, those people will take seats by taking advantage of the quota, who do not fall under the basic objective of the policy. Due to this, more qualified candidates will be sidelined. A division bench of Chief Justice Sheel Nagu and Justice Arun Khetrapal passed this order while hearing the petition filed by Geeta Verma and several other candidates for admission in MBBS and BDS courses.
