Commissionerate Police Amritsar has busted drug cartels after arresting eight key operatives including one official from an enforcement agency and recovered 4.04 kg Heroin from their possession, said Commissioner of Police (CP) Amritsar Gurpreet Singh Bhullar here on Wednesday.
Initially, Police have arrested two arrested two persons identified as Manjit of Rohtak in Haryana, currently posted as Inspector in an Enforcement Agency; and his Ravi Kumar of Gandhi Nagar in Ferozepur. Police teams have also impounded their Royal Enfield Motorcycle being used for delivery of consignments.
The CP said that the arrested official of Enforcement agency was misusing his position to facilitate the network in connivance with his co-accused Ravi. The duo was sourcing consignments from across the border, with accused Ravi was directly in contact with the foreign-based smugglers, he said.
He said that further investigations have led to the arrest of six more accused involved in drug smuggling and hawala financing.
The remaining six arrested accused persons have been identified as Palwinder Singh alias Tindu of village Dhanoa Khurd in Amritsar, Rohit Sharma alias Rohit of Harkrishna Nagar in Amritsar, Abhishek Singh of village Chougawan in Amritsar, Arshdeep Singh of Baba Deep Singh Colony in Amritsar, Amit Kumar alias Sonu of Sunder Nagar Amritsar and Satnam Singh of village Chhiddan in Amritsar have been arrested in second module.
He said that probe has revealed that one of the arrested accused identified as Amit was operating a cross-border hawala network to facilitate the drug trade in the area. Multiple FIRs under relevant sections of the NDPS Act have been registered at Police Stations Chheharta and Ranjit Avenue, he said, while adding that initial probe indicates wider involvement—efforts on to trace and dismantle the entire network.
Sharing operation details, CP Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said that acting on reliable inputs, Police teams under the supervision of DCP investigation Ravinder Pal Singh Sandhu, ADCP Investigation Jagbinder Singh, and ACP Investigation Harminder Singh Sandhu led by Incharge CIA-1 Amolakdeep Singh apprehended the above accused and recovered heroin.
The CP said that police teams have also identified another accomplice involved in the drug smuggling, while, probe is on to identify the person, who was supposed to receive the consignment. Efforts are being made to uncover the entire network of suppliers, dealers, and buyers, as well as to ascertain the total quantity of drugs purchased by the arrested individuals so far, he added.
