Punjab’s Golden Girl Tanvi Sharma has become the Junior World No. 1 in Badminton. She put up a stellar performance that created a stir in the international badminton circuit. 16-year-old Tanvi Sharma from Hoshiarpur, Punjab was the runner-up in the women’s singles category at the BWF Super 300 US Open 2025. Tanvi’s stellar performance at the US Open is a significant milestone in her budding career as the young Indian shuttler, ranked 66th in the world, has become the Junior World No. 1 player and has entered the top 50 in the World Badminton Rankings.

Tanvi had stunned the global badminton community with her fearless campaign at the BWF Super 300, defeating several highly ranked rivals including the World No. 23 player to enter the final. Overwhelmed with her success, her mother and coach Meena Sharma said that this is one of the happiest moments and she is unable to find words to express her happiness.

In the championship match held in California, Tanvi lost to the top seed of the tournament and Olympian Beiwen Zhang of the United States in a tough three-game match. Despite her best efforts, she lost the third set 10-21 and had to settle for the silver medal. She said that she was a bit nervous on the court during the final and made many mistakes, which led to her defeat in the final. Now she wants to work on her mistakes and improve them and aims to win a medal in the Asian Junior Championships to be held next month. Tanvi will fly from the US tonight and join the Indian badminton team camp in Guwahati. The team will participate in the Asian Junior Championships to be held in Indonesia next month.

Tanvi’s journey to this international stage has been inspiring. She started playing badminton at the young age of six and talent started showing in her right from the beginning. She trained for over four years at the prestigious Pullela Gopichand Badminton Academy, where she honed her skills with some of India’s top shuttlers. Her mother, who is also her coach, has played a key role in shaping her game and honing her talent.

Tanvi’s father Vikas Sharma, who is working as a superintendent at the ADC office in Hoshiarpur, expressed his happiness and pride. Tanvi has made all of us proud. It is a matter of great pride for our family and India to see her playing with such confidence and maturity with world-class opponents at just 16 years of age. I have spoken to her on the phone, she is very happy and we are also very happy, he said.
