Ignoring the Solid Waste Management Bylaws in Punjab will now be costly. Throwing garbage on the street or failing to separate wet and dry waste at home will result in a fine. Failure to pay the fine will result in community service, which could include sweeping the street or cleaning walls.
Sanitation Bylaws Issued
The Local Bodies Department has issued Solid Waste Management and Sanitation Bylaws. According to the rules, anyone who fails to pay the fine imposed for violating the bylaws may be required to clean the street or walls for one hour. Despite government enforcement, complaints of open garbage dumping and failure to segregate household waste are still being received. In light of this, the provision of community service along with the fine has been introduced.
A fine of one thousand rupees for not segregating waste
Under the rules, a fine of one thousand rupees will be imposed for failing to segregate waste in homes in colonies. A fine of one thousand rupees has also been imposed for homes with an area of 50 to 500 square meters. A fine of two thousand rupees will be imposed for throwing garbage in open or public spaces from these two categories. Food and beverage shops, sweet shops, coffee shops, and canteens will be fined three thousand rupees for openly throwing garbage. Liquor shops will be fined ten thousand rupees, while beauty parlors and salons will be fined four to ten thousand rupees.
Waste collection fee also fixed
The municipal department has also fixed a monthly fee for garbage collection from homes. 20 rupees will be charged from homes in colonies. 50 to 100 square meters will be charged for homes with an area of 100 to 200 square meters, and 100 rupees for homes with an area of 100 to 200 square meters. A monthly fee of ₹150 will be charged from homes with an area of 201 to 500 square meters, while homes with an area of more than 500 square meters will be charged ₹200.
Events cannot be held without permission.
For gatherings or events involving more than 100 people at unlicensed locations, permission must be obtained from the local body or the relevant agency at least three days in advance. Organizers must collect waste separately and hand it over to an authorized waste collection agency. Event waste must be disposed of according to established procedures.
