Senior Punjab BJP leader and former Cabinet Minister Chunni Lal Bhagat has passed away. The news of his passing has sent shockwaves through the political and social circles of Jalandhar. Chunni Lal Bhagat’s life was a long journey of struggle, business, social service, and politics. After immigrating to India from Pakistan, he made Jalandhar his hometown, building his business here and achieving such a high political position that he rose to the position of Cabinet Minister in the state government.
Chunni Lal Bhagat was born in Sialkot. After the partition of the country, he had to migrate from Pakistan to India. Starting a new life during that period of displacement was not easy, but he worked diligently and established his business in Jalandhar. Over time, he established his name in the sports goods trade and established his business under the name Sheela Sports. During his business career, his contacts within the social and business circles of Jalandhar grew, and this networking later became a strong foundation for his political journey.
After entering politics, Chunni Lal Bhagat did not limit his efforts to merely winning elections. He focused on strengthening the organization in Jalandhar and establishing his influence among the people. In 1985, he first entered electoral politics, contesting as an independent candidate from the Jalandhar South Assembly constituency. He was unsuccessful in that election, but he did not leave the political arena.
Following this, his political affiliation with the BJP grew stronger. While remaining active in the party organization, he built his support base in Jalandhar. The results were evident in 1997, when he won the Jalandhar South Assembly seat on a BJP ticket and entered the Punjab Legislative Assembly for the first time. This was a significant milestone in his political career. He subsequently won again from the same seat in 2007, strengthening his position in the Assembly.
Won from Jalandhar West in 2012
The Jalandhar South seat underwent a change in its structure after the Assembly delimitation. In 2012, Chunni Lal Bhagat contested the Jalandhar West Assembly constituency and won. His consistent electoral successes established him among the leading leaders of the Punjab BJP, not just in Jalandhar.
His political stature can be gauged from the fact that in 2011, he was elected Deputy Speaker of the Punjab Legislative Assembly. Subsequently, in 2012, he was also appointed Leader of the BJP Legislative Party. This signaled his growing political influence within the party and the Assembly.
Minister in the Badal Government
When the Akali-BJP coalition government was formed under the leadership of Parkash Singh Badal in 2012, Chunni Lal Bhagat was appointed a Cabinet Minister. He was given charge of important portfolios in the government. He handled departments such as Local Bodies, Medical Education and Research, and later, he also held portfolios such as Forest and Wildlife Conservation and Labor.####CANADA###USA###UK###PUNJAB###JALANDHAR###AAP###BJP###PM-MODI###AMIT-SHAH###AUSTRALIA###NEWZEALAND###SINGAPORE###
