Senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader and former cabinet minister Bikram Singh Majithia has been in the news for the past 10 years due to legal cases. He has been a constant political target ahead of the 2017, 2022, and now the 2027 assembly elections. The Aam Aadmi Party has cornered the Akali Dal by making him an election issue in all three elections.

In the 2017 assembly elections, the Aam Aadmi Party accused Majithia of having links with drug smugglers. Party leaders promised to send him to jail. Majithia later filed a defamation suit against Arvind Kejriwal. In March 2018, Kejriwal apologized to Majithia. However, the investigation into the drug allegations continued, and an FIR was filed just before the 2022 elections. On December 20, 2021, a case was registered in Mohali under sections of the NDPS Act.

2022 Elections and Arrest

The then-Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi’s government took action against Majithia. On February 24, 2022, on the orders of the Supreme Court, Majithia surrendered before a special court in Mohali. He was sent to Patiala jail in judicial custody. After nearly five and a half months, on August 10, 2022, he was granted bail by the Punjab and Haryana High Court. In the 2022 elections, he lost to Navjot Singh Sidhu from the Amritsar East seat.

Disproportionate Assets Case

Even after the Aam Aadmi Party formed the government in 2022, the drug trafficking case remained under investigation. On June 25, 2025, the Punjab Vigilance Bureau arrested Majithia in a disproportionate assets case. According to the Vigilance Bureau, the investigation revealed alleged illegal wealth of approximately ₹540 crore. On August 22, 2025, a 40,000-page charge sheet was filed in the special court in Mohali. It contained details of assets and financial irregularities worth approximately ₹700 crore. Majithia was granted bail by the Supreme Court on February 2, 2026.

Supplementary Chargesheet Before the 2027 Elections

A few months before the 2027 Assembly elections, Majithia is back in the headlines. On October 28, 2026, the Vigilance Bureau filed a supplementary chargesheet in the disproportionate assets case. It details alleged assets and financial transactions worth approximately ₹736 crore.

The charge-Sheet also mentions alleged unaccounted cash deposits of ₹161 crore and foreign transactions of ₹141 crore. Alleged unexplained deposits of ₹236 crore in company accounts are also mentioned. The total length of the document filed has reached 52,000 to 53,000 pages. Majithia is calling these allegations false and accusing the government of political vendetta. The final decision on these charges is still pending in court.###CANADA###USA###UK###PUNJAB###MAJITHIYA###AUSTRALIA###NEWZEALAND###GERMANY###ITLAY###FRANCE###SPAIN###SINGAPORE
