Khalistani supporter and Punjab’s Khadoor Sahib Lok Sabha seat MP Amritpal has got a big relief from the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed the petition against the election of Amritpal Singh as MP from Khadoor Sahib. Amritpal is currently lodged in Dibrugarh jail in Assam.

The petitioner claimed before a bench of Justice BR Gavai and Justice KV Vishwanathan that Article 84 of the Constitution deals with the eligibility for membership of Parliament. Under this, a person will not be eligible to fill the seat of Parliament unless he is a citizen of India.

The petitioner, who appeared in person, said that in this case Amritpal Singh had said that he does not have loyalty to the Constitution of India. On this, the bench said that you should file an election petition.

The petitioner said that he is not a voter of Khadoor Sahib constituency, but he is very hurt by the statements made earlier by Amritpal Singh. The bench said that this is a matter of evidence. There are prescribed procedures for this. There are provisions in the Representation of the People Act. The bench refused to consider the petition and dismissed it.

Amritpal Singh contested the Lok Sabha seat Khadoor Sahib as an independent candidate while in jail and won by a margin of more than two lakh votes. After this, Amritpal Singh took oath as a Lok Sabha member on July 5. He was given four days parole for the oath. Amritpal Singh, who led the Waris Punjab De organization, is lodged in Dibrugarh jail in Assam for alleged crimes under the National Security Act (NSA).
