Drug addiction has become a problem in Punjab. Despite the best efforts of the police and administration, people are dying every other day due to drug addiction. To eradicate drug addiction, the police has now reached the public. Village Defence Committee (VDC) has been formed to catch the drug sale points in every village. 505 VDCs have been deployed in Kapurthala district, while the process of formation is going on in the remaining places as well. This is also one of the steps being taken by the Punjab government with the aim of making the state drug-free.

Under this, DIG Jalandhar Range Harmanbir Singh Gill held a meeting with the newly formed VDCs in the Police Line on Friday and assured them of all possible help from the police. While the DIG boosted the morale of the VDCs, he also instructed the police officers to take immediate action on the information given by them.

While reviewing the complaints in the district with SSP Vatsala Gupta, Group GO, police chiefs and other officials at the local police line, the DIG said that investigations at various levels and pending complaints should be disposed of as soon as possible by taking appropriate action as per rules. An effective action plan should be prepared and implemented to resolve various serious issues in the district, so that such cases can be resolved in a timely manner.

The DIG directed the officials that a large-scale campaign is being run by the Punjab government to eliminate drug abuse, under which such activities in the district should be closely monitored and strict action should be taken against drug smugglers. Regarding the campaign launched for the elimination of drug abuse, he said that 'Village Defense Committees' have been formed which will help in curbing anti-social activities in villages in a systematic manner. During this, he also interacted with the members of these committees who came from various villages. He said that concrete efforts are being made against drug abuse by making the youth aware about the ill effects of drug abuse.

CCTVs will be installed at medical stores

The DIG said that a joint checking campaign is being conducted soon with the cooperation of the district administration. CCTV cameras will be installed at medical stores. Gazetted officers will be able to check them anytime and can check the backup of the last one month of these cameras and further action will be taken on any suspicious activity. This social evil can be eradicated with the cooperation of the people and checking is being increased by the police and civil administration with the cooperation of the people. Youths and village elders who do excellent work against social evils will also be encouraged.

Regular monitoring of de-addiction centers

During a meeting with officials of various departments in the presence of DC Amit Kumar Panchal, the DIG stressed the need to increase vigilance with joint efforts of all departments for the prevention of drug addiction. He asked the health department officials to ensure regular monitoring of drug addicts through de-addiction centers.

No trust in police

In front of DIG Jalandhar Range Harmanbir Singh Gill, a VDC member villager exposed the police. During the meeting, a village dignitary said that it should not happen that we get a person arrested by the police and two-three days later that person is sitting at his home. The police may take money and release him. If this happens then what is the use. While leaving the meeting, dignitaries from various villages even said that if the police cooperates properly then it is fine otherwise do not expect cooperation from us.
