In response to a question asked by Rajya Sabha member Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal in Parliament regarding the efforts to bring back Indians trapped in Gulf countries, the Central Government claimed that more than 38 thousand Indians, most of whom are women, have been brought back in the last five years.
Rajya Sabha member Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal is very serious about the exploitation of Punjab’s daughters and sisters in Gulf countries and from time to time he has been continuously raising his voice in the House on this serious issue. Due to his efforts, more than 100 daughters and sisters of Punjab have been brought back in the last two years, who were trapped there by travel agents by luring them with huge salaries.
Rajya Sabha member Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal asked during the tumultuous winter session that how many Indian women are trapped in Arab countries and how many Indians have been brought back in the last five years. The Ministry of External Affairs of the Central Government, referring to human trafficking from Arab countries, said that Indian citizens are trapped in 9 countries. Responding to a question raised by Sant Seechewal, the ministry said that during the last five years, 38,917 Indian nationals have been brought back safely from 9 Arab countries. The people who were exploited there were made to work too much, were kept as slaves. They were not paid for their work and faced many other serious difficulties.
The Ministry of External Affairs said that the maximum number of 17,454 Indian nationals have been brought back from Muscat (Oman). Saudi Arabia comes in second place, from where 10,023, 7,330 from Kuwait, 3,568 from Dubai, 239 from Qatar, 180 from Iraq, 83 from Libya and 35 from Bahrain were successfully brought back to their homeland. Among these countries, Syria is the only country where the least i.e. only five Indians have been brought back.
Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal said that he is constantly trying that the daughters and sisters of Punjab do not go to these Arab countries. After going there, these women are allegedly sold in a way. They are later asked to pay lakhs of rupees for their return.
