EDITOR-IN-CHIEF.VINAY KOCHHAR FROM MANSA.
Mansa holds a unique significance in Punjab’s history. It is a region where peasants once struggled for land rights, where farmer-labor movements challenged the establishment, and where voices have, from time to time, shaped Punjab’s politics.
Now, the voice against drug abuse from Mansa has shaken the entire Punjab. After the October 13 shooting death of anti-drug campaigner Parvinder Singh Jhota, the matter is no longer limited to the murder of one individual, but has become a major question about the drug trade, law and order, and the safety of those who speak out against it.
A Punjab bandh has been called on October 15th in protest against Jhota’s murder, supported by various farmer organizations, employee organizations, business organizations, and political parties. The family and supporters are demanding a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) investigation into the case. This incident has once again placed Mansa at the center of widespread public resistance in Punjab.
Mansa holds a special significance in Punjab’s history. Here, peasants fought for land rights. Farmer-labor movements also challenged the ruling class. Political consciousness emerged against princely rule in 1928. The Naxalbari movement also resonated here in the 1960s. These movements raised questions of land rights and social justice.
Decades later, the focus of the conflict in Mansa has shifted. Previously, it was about land and ownership. Now, the focus is on protecting Punjab’s young generation from drug abuse. After Jhota’s murder, the matter became a statewide issue. Political parties, farmers’ organizations, and social organizations have responded. The administration has a responsibility to conduct an impartial investigation and punish the culprits.
History professor Sonia Mehta says that Mansa has a revolutionary history. The question now is whether Punjab will be able to translate this voice against drug abuse into concrete action. An impartial investigation into Parvinder Jhota’s murder is essential. His family deserves justice. Effective action against the drug trade is the only real answer. This challenge will be solved not by slogans, but by a transparent investigation and public participation.###UK###CANADA###USA###JHOTA’S###MURDER###MANSA###HISTORY###PUNJAB-POLICE###CHANDIGARH###AUSTRALIA###NEWZEALAND###AUSTRIA###SINGAPORE###GERMANY###HUNGRY###ITLAY###
