In Haryana’s Panipat, the bride did not like the lehenga sent by her in-laws, so she sent the wedding procession back. The people of the bride’s side got angry over bringing artificial jewellery instead of gold and not bringing the garland. After which there was a lot of pushing and shoving between the two parties in the marriage palace.

When the dispute increased, the police dial-112 team was called on the spot. After this, the police made both the parties sit and explained.

The girl’s side had clearly refused to marry regarding the lehenga and jewellery. After which the wedding procession returned to Amritsar. None of the two parties complained to the police. The incident took place on 23 February in a marriage hall located in Bhatia Colony. The incident came to light after the video of the ruckus went viral on 24 February.

The girl’s mother said – did not even bring the garland

The girl’s mother said that “I work as a labourer. On 25 October 2024, we had fixed the marriage of our younger daughter in Amritsar, Punjab. We got the marriage of the elder daughter done at another place. The elder daughter’s in-laws talked about getting married after 2 years. I also thought of getting the younger daughter married along with the elder daughter’s marriage, but as soon as the marriage was fixed, the boy’s family started pressuring for the marriage.

We fixed the marriage on 23 February. The procession came from Amritsar. The boy’s family brought old lehenga and artificial jewellery for the bride. They did not even bring the garland.”

The woman’s allegation – took out the sword and started fighting

The woman further said that the boy’s side told her that we do not have the tradition of jaimala here. They started fighting by taking out the sword after a scuffle. In the name of getting a lehenga, they made us pay 13 thousand rupees in advance in Delhi’s Chandni Chowk and later refused. Similarly, they booked a room in a hotel and then refused.

They also filed a police complaint accusing us of demanding one lakh rupees. We did not ask for any money. When this is the condition of those people before the marriage, how could the daughter be fine after it.

The woman said – is this even a lehenga, it stinks

The biggest dispute in the baraat was over the lehenga. A relative of the girl and her mother showed the lehenga brought by the groom’s side and said, look is this even a lehenga, it is old, it stinks. We also showed it to the girl. This is a used lehenga. The lace is off. It is a 20 rupee string. We have not sold our daughter. These people want to take the girl away with a ring and artificial jewellery. If they are doing this now, what will they do with our daughter later.

The boy’s brother said – sometimes the lehenga was told to cost 20 thousand and sometimes 30 thousand

At the same time, the boy’s brother said that “We had asked for about 2 years time for the marriage, but the girl’s family kept pressuring us again and again. They took 10 thousand rupees from us for booking the hall. Sometimes the lehenga was told to cost 20 thousand and sometimes 30 thousand rupees. We had just built a new house. Somehow, by taking money on interest, we brought whatever we could.

First the girl’s grandmother said that get 5 gold jewellery made. Get the lehenga from Chandni Chowk in Delhi. Then the lehenga we brought, she said that it was old and refused to do the wedding rituals. We had rented a car for 35 thousand.”
